Chart a labour and record the birth

Record labour readings, the delivery and each baby, and register a baby born alive as a patient linked to the mother.

The Labour tab keeps a labour and the birth together, on the mother's record.

Steps

  1. Open the mother's record and choose Labour. It shows for a patient with an antenatal record.
  2. Choose Record a reading each time you measure or see something. Fill in what applies, such as how far the cervix has opened, the baby's heart rate, contractions, the waters and the blood pressure, then choose Record the reading.
  3. When the baby is born, choose Record the delivery. Enter the day and time, how the baby was born, and anything else you know.
  4. Choose Register a baby. Choose Born alive or Stillbirth, the sex, and the weight and scores if you have them, then choose Register the baby.
  5. For twins, choose Register a baby again for each one.

What to expect

The charts show the cervix and the baby's heart rate over the hours of the labour, with every reading listed below. A reading is never changed. If one was wrong, record the next and say so in its note.

A baby born alive gets a record of their own, named "Baby of" the mother until the parents choose a name. Change the name from Edit registration details on the baby's record. The baby's record says who they were born to.

A stillbirth is kept with the delivery and no patient record is made.

Recording the delivery does not close the pregnancy. Close it from the antenatal record when you are ready.
